How to Choose a Strap-On Harness: FTM and Trans Masc Guide
A strap-on harness holds a dildo in place so you can move the way you want to. Choosing one comes down to three things: how it fits your body, how long you will wear it, and how you want it to feel. This guide covers all three, plus sizing, O-rings, care, and an honest read on our three harnesses.
How does a strap-on harness work?
The harness attaches around your waist, your thighs, or both, with adjustable straps. The dildo sits through a central O-ring, a circular opening that holds it steady. Most O-rings come out, so you can swap dildos.
That is the whole mechanism. Everything after this is fit, feel and style.
How should a harness actually fit?
Three checks, in this order. Get these right and the rest is preference.
The base sits flat. The plate holding the O-ring should press evenly against your body — pubic mound, over a packer, wherever you wear it. If it tilts or gaps, thrust force goes into the straps instead of into your body, and your control goes with it.
Snug, not strangling. Tighten until the harness moves with your hips like it is part of you. You should be able to slide a finger under the straps. If your skin is creased white when it comes off, back off a notch.
No drift. The real test happens in motion. A fitted harness stays centred through a full session. If you are re-centring the base every few minutes, the fit is wrong — usually too loose, sometimes the wrong style for your body shape.
What size do you need?
Measure your waist where the harness will actually sit, not where your jeans sit. Then:
- Signature Leather and Explorer — adjustable strap systems that cover most bodies. Cinch to fit.
- Joque by SpareParts — two sizes. Size A fits 20–50" waists, Size B fits 35–65". They overlap, so if you land between 35 and 50" either works.
Between adjustments on any harness, snugger is the right call. Straps loosen with enthusiasm. They do not tighten themselves.
The three types, and the honest downside of each
Neoprene: the Explorer
The most forgiving option. Soft adjustable straps that fit a wide range of bodies, easy on and off, machine washable, and vegan. It is also the only one of the three with a built-in pleasure pocket — a slot behind the base sized for a bullet vibe, so the wearer is not an afterthought. The OG Bullet was practically made for it.
The downside: neoprene is neoprene. It is the right first harness and a great travel harness. It is not an heirloom.
Leather: the Signature Leather Harness
The classic. Structured, durable, and substantially more present than neoprene. Handmade in small batches with black hardware, in Black, Purple or Turquoise. This is the one that molds to you: leather breaks in, remembers your shape, and looks better at year five than on day one.
The downside: it is leather. Wipe-downs, not submersion, and it costs more than the Explorer.
Underwear style: the Joque by SpareParts
Wears exactly like underwear, so nobody knows you have it on. Two-ply moisture-wicking fabric, standard O-ring at the front, machine washable, comfortable all day. For a lot of trans masc people it is also the most affirming of the three, because putting it on feels like getting dressed rather than putting on gear.

O-ring size: the one spec that matters
The dildo's base has to be wider than the O-ring so it cannot pull through. The standard opening is 1.5–2 inches, and many harnesses ship with more than one ring.

Using a strap-on for the first time
Practise before it counts. Put the harness on, adjust every strap, walk around in it, feel where the dildo sits. The more at home you are in it, the more confident you will be with someone else in the room.

Care and cleaning
- Leather — rinse with warm water after use and condition periodically. Never submerge it.
- Neoprene and fabric — machine washable.
- Silicone dildos — wash with warm water and mild soap, or boil, or run through the dishwasher on the top rack with no soap. Non-porous, so they are shareable with a wash or a condom between users.
